Green Bean Casserole with Chicken

It’s creamy, savory, a little crunchy on top, and has tender chicken and veggies inside. This recipe brings together everything you love about a traditional green bean casserole, but we’re making it a full meal by adding seasoned chicken breast. Yum!

Method 

Cook the Chicken

Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat and melting 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Once the butter is melted and slightly bubbling, add in your chicken breast pieces. Make sure the chicken is cut into bite-sized chunks so it cooks quickly and evenly. Sprinkle the chicken with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to coat each piece with the seasoning. Let the chicken cook undisturbed for a minute or two to get a nice sear, then stir occasionally, cooking for a total of about 5 minutes or until the pieces are golden brown and mostly cooked through. At this stage, the chicken doesn’t need to be fully cooked it will finish cooking later when everything simmers together. Once done, transfer the chicken to a plate and set it aside.

Sauté the Veggies

In the same skillet, add 1/2 tablespoon of unsalted butter along with 1/2 tablespoon of oil. The butter gives flavor while the oil helps prevent it from burning. Once the butter melts, toss in your diced onions and cook them for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally until they become soft and translucent. Then, add the sliced cremini mushrooms to the pan. Let them cook with the onions for another 3 minutes. The mushrooms will release some of their moisture and begin to brown slightly, which adds a rich, earthy flavor to the dish.

Add the Green Beans

After the onions and mushrooms have cooked down a bit, it’s time to add the trimmed and halved green beans. These will bring a pop of color and a fresh crunch to the casserole. Season them with a little garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together and let the green beans sauté for about 3 to 4 minutes. You want them to soften slightly while still keeping that vibrant green color and a bit of bite. If you prefer them softer, feel free to cook for an extra minute or two.

Pour in the Gravy

Now let’s bring in the flavor bomb gravy! Take your 12 oz jar of Heinz Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Gravy, pour 1/4 cup of water into the nearly empty jar, close the lid tightly, and give it a good shake to get every last bit of gravy goodness. Pour both the gravy and the water into the skillet with the veggies. Stir gently to mix everything together and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for about 2 minutes so the gravy can warm up and start to coat the vegetables evenly.

Bring It All Together

Once your gravy and veggies are simmering nicely, it’s time to add the cooked chicken back into the skillet. Stir it in carefully so that all the chicken is well-coated in the creamy gravy mixture. Let everything simmer together for another 2 to 3 minutes. This final step lets the chicken finish cooking and helps all the flavors blend beautifully. The sauce will slightly thicken, and the dish will look deliciously creamy and hearty.

Time to Serve!

Your casserole is now ready to serve! Spoon the savory chicken and vegetable mixture over a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes, warm rice, or cooked pasta whatever your heart desires. And for that extra crunch and cheesy goodness, sprinkle crispy fried onions and freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top. The textures and flavors all come together to make a comforting, satisfying meal that’s bound to be a hit at the table.

Ingredients

  • For the Chicken

  • 1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

  • For the Rest of the Casserole

  • 5 oz green beans, ends trimmed and cut in half

  • 6 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced

  • 1/2 medium onion, diced

  • 12 oz jar Heinz Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Gravy

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt (or to taste)

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 1/2 tbsp oil

  • Toppings (Optional but fun!)

  • Crispy fried onions

  • Grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

  • Cook the Chicken
    Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add your bite-sized chicken pieces along with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the chicken is golden and mostly cooked through. Remove it from the pan and set it aside for now.
  • Sauté the Veggies
    Add oil and the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Toss in the diced onions and cook for 2 minutes until they soften. Add in the mushrooms and cook for another 3 minutes until they start to brown.
  • Add the Green Beans
    Now it’s time for the green beans! Add them to the skillet, sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes. They should be a little tender but still bright green.
  • Pour in the Gravy
    Grab that jar of Heinz Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Gravy. Add 1/4 cup of water to the jar, close the lid, shake it like a maraca, and pour it all into the skillet. Stir everything together and let it simmer for 2 minutes.
  • Bring It All Together
    Add the cooked chicken back into the skillet. Mix everything together and let it simmer for 2–3 more minutes so the flavors can really come together.
  • Time to Serve!
    Spoon the delicious mixture over mashed potatoes, fluffy rice, or your favorite pasta. Top it off with crispy fried onions and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Boom dinner is served!

Notes

  • Don’t overcook the chicken in step 1 it will finish cooking when you simmer everything together later.
  • Green beans cook fast! If you want them soft, cook a little longer, but if you like a bit of crunch, stick to 3–4 minutes.
  • When adding gravy and water, make sure the skillet isn’t too hot to avoid the sauce thickening too fast.
  • Stir gently once everything’s in the pan so you don’t break the chicken or squish the beans.
