Crispy Baked Chicken Wings – Super Crunchy & Totally Delicious!

If you’re looking for crispy baked chicken wings ever, you’re in the right place! These wings are so tasty and easy to make. They’re baked, not fried, but still turn out golden, crunchy, and full of flavor. Toss them in your favorite sauce, or just dip them on the side. Either way, you’ll be licking your fingers clean!

Method

Preheating the Oven

To start, preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C). This high temperature is key for getting that perfectly crispy skin. While the oven is heating up, prepare your baking setup. Place a cooling rack on top of a large baking sheet. The rack allows hot air to circulate all around the wings, helping them bake evenly and become super crunchy on all sides. Set this aside for now.

Drying the Chicken Wings

Next, it’s time to prep the wings. Take your 3 pounds of party wings both flats and drumettes and give them a good rinse if you’d like. Then, using paper towels, pat each piece completely dry. This is one of the most important steps! Any moisture left on the wings will create steam in the oven and prevent them from crisping up. The drier the wings, the better the crunch!

Coating with Oil and Seasoning

Once your wings are dry, place them in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle them with one tablespoon of avocado oil (or any neutral cooking oil you prefer). Toss the wings to make sure they’re evenly coated. Now it’s time for flavor! Add in 2 teaspoons of Johnny’s seasoning salt, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 tablespoon of baking powder. Toss the wings thoroughly until every piece is well-seasoned.

Double Coating with Baking Powder

After the first toss, sprinkle in the second tablespoon of baking powder and toss the wings again. The baking powder is your secret ingredient for extra crispiness. It helps draw moisture from the skin, allowing it to get nice and crunchy as it bakes. Make sure the wings are evenly coated and there are no clumps of baking powder.

Arranging the Wings for Baking

Now, arrange the seasoned wings on the cooling rack you prepared earlier. Place each piece skin-side down, making sure there’s a little bit of space between every wing. Avoid crowding them if the wings are too close together, they’ll steam instead of crisp. If necessary, use a second baking sheet and rack.

Baking the Wings – First Side

Put the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the wings for 25 minutes. During this time, the heat will begin to work its magic, rendering out the fat and crisping up the skin on the bottom side.

Flipping the Wings

After 25 minutes, take the wings out of the oven and use tongs to carefully flip each one over so the skin side is now facing up. This helps the other side get just as golden and crispy.

Baking the Wings – Second Side

Return the wings to the oven and continue baking for another 20 to 25 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when they have a beautiful golden-brown color, crispy edges, and an irresistible smell that fills your kitchen. You can also check for doneness by making sure the internal temperature has reached 165°F.

Serving the Wings

Once baked, remove the wings from the oven and let them cool slightly. Now comes the fun part you can serve them as they are, with dipping sauces on the side, or toss them in your favorite sauce like buffalo, BBQ, or garlic parmesan. Either way, they’re going to be a hit!

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs chicken party wings (flats and drumettes)

  • 2 tablespoons baking powder (not baking soda!)

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil (or any cooking oil)

  • 2 teaspoons Johnny’s seasoning salt

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  • Place a cooling rack on top of a baking sheet. This lets air flow under the wings and makes them extra crispy.
  • Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels. The drier, the better this helps them crisp up!
  • In a large bowl, toss the wings with oil to coat them evenly.
  • Sprinkle in the seasoning: Johnny’s seasoning salt, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and 1 tablespoon of baking powder. Toss well.
  • Add the second tablespoon of baking powder and give it one more good toss. This double coating really helps the crunch.
  • Place the wings skin-side down on the rack, leaving a little space between each one.
  • Bake for 25 minutes, then flip each wing over with tongs.
  • Bake for another 20–25 minutes, or until the wings are golden, crispy, and your kitchen smells amazing.
  • Serve with sauce on the side, or toss them right in your favorite wing sauce. Yum!

Notes

  • Don’t skip drying the wings. Wet wings won’t crisp up!
  • Use baking powder, not baking soda (they’re not the same!)
  • Leave space between each wing on the rack so the heat can circulate.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan if needed; use two baking sheets.
  • Flip them halfway through baking to get both sides nice and golden.

Serving Suggestions

  • Toss in buffalo sauce for a spicy kick
  • Try honey BBQ or garlic parmesan for fun flavors
  • Serve with ranch or blue cheese dip
  • Add celery sticks or carrot sticks on the side for a crunchy balance
  • Make it a meal with fries or coleslaw

Fun Fact

Did you know that baking powder is the secret weapon for crispy wings? It helps dry out the skin while baking, giving you that crunch without a deep fryer. Pretty cool, right?

Conclusion

These crispy baked chicken wings are a total win! They’re easy to make, full of flavor, and so crunchy you won’t even miss the fryer. Perfect for game days, family dinners, or anytime you’re craving something delicious. Give them a try and let me know how yours turn out!
