Who knew making jam could be this simple and delicious? Today, I’m sharing my favorite homemade 3 ingredient blueberry jam recipe that even kids can help make. It’s fresh, fruity, and bursting with real blueberry flavor. Plus no cooking or fancy canning tools needed!
Whether you’re spreading it on toast, mixing it into yogurt, or sneaking spoonfuls straight from the jar (guilty!), this jam is always a hit.
Method
Wash & Smash
First things first give your blueberries a good rinse under cool water. Be sure to sort through and remove any stems or leaves you find. Once they’re all clean, pour them into a large mixing bowl. Using a potato masher or a sturdy fork, begin mashing the blueberries until they’re fully crushed. You’ll want to measure out exactly 3 cups of mashed berries. Don’t worry about getting it perfectly smooth; having a few small chunks adds to the homemade texture and flavor.
Sweeten It
Next, it’s time to sweeten the mix. Add 4 cups of granulated sugar to your mashed blueberries. Stir everything together really well until the sugar is fully combined with the fruit. You might notice the mixture becoming a little syrupy, and that’s totally normal. After mixing, let it sit for a bit while you move on to the next step; this allows the sugar to start dissolving and blending into the berries.
Pectin Power
In a small saucepan, combine one box of Sure-Jell Fruit Pectin with ¾ cup of water. Place the saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat and begin stirring immediately. As it heats up, keep stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Once it starts boiling, let it boil for exactly 1 minute while continuing to stir. This step activates the pectin, which is what helps your jam thicken and set later on. After one minute, remove the saucepan from the heat right away.
Mix & Stir
Quickly pour the hot pectin mixture into your big bowl of sweetened blueberries. Now comes the muscle work stir the entire mixture constantly for 3 to 5 minutes. This is important because it helps everything blend evenly and starts the gelling process. You’ll notice the mixture thickening slightly as you stir, and the color will deepen into a beautiful blueberry purple. The longer you stir, the better the texture will be when it sets.
Jar It Up
Once your jam is fully mixed, it’s time to fill your jars. Using a clean spoon or a funnel (to avoid sticky spills), carefully scoop the jam into your prepared jars. Make sure the jars are completely clean and dry before filling. Leave about ½ inch of space at the top so the jam has room to expand a little. After all the jars are filled, screw the lids on tightly. There’s no need to boil the jars or use a canner for this recipe it sets safely at room temperature.
Store It
Now, let your jars sit undisturbed at room temperature for 24 hours. This is when the jam sets and becomes thick and spreadable. Don’t shake or move them during this time just let them do their thing. After the 24 hours are up, check the texture. If everything looks good, store your jam in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or freeze it for longer storage (up to 1 year!). Once thawed, frozen jam keeps its flavor and texture beautifully.
